After doing that and re-installing the Windows 8.1 drivers yet one more time, the scanner came to life! ScanGear now works reliably and rapidly from any PC in my home LAN (as does the printing function), and I am enjoying all features of this nice vintage PIXMA printer. After numerous driver re-installations, it occurred to me to try connecting the printer directly to my router with an Ethernet cable. I was able to operate the scanner most of the time if I installed the printer as a USB printer, but not dependably with a wireless LAN connection. I chose wireless LAN installation and was able to print with it from any PC on my home LAN, but scanning was a hit or miss adventure - mostly miss - with frequent "scanner not connected" messages. When I installed a used Canon MX860 in my Windows 10 system, I encountered frequent errors when trying to scan images.
